The Story of Mathare River FC
A football club built not just on goals, but on purpose.
We’re proud to be backed by World Waternet—not just as a sponsor, but as a partner in something much bigger: the regeneration of the Mathare River. This isn’t your average sponsorship deal. It’s a shared mission.
Mathare River FC is the first team in Kenya dedicated to environmental action. That’s right. A club born from the people who’ve been cleaning, protecting, and restoring the Mathare River for years. Community groups that decided, “Why not bring football into this?” And they did.
But this is no PR stunt.
We are the same group behind the “Football for Plastic” League, where every team brings solid waste before they can even kick a ball. Clean the environment, earn a little money, and then get on the pitch. It’s football with grit. Football with impact.
In 2024, we were part of the Future Design Basecamp—a space where partners like Embassy of the Earth, Water Resources Authority (WRA), Nairobi City Water & Sewerage Co Ltd, and World Waternet came together. Not just to talk. To build. To listen. To act.
Right now, Mathare River FC is grinding it out in the sub-county league. We’re playing on dusty pitches, wearing our new World Waternet shirts with pride. But we’re dreaming bigger:
👉 A clean Mathare River.
👉 A club in the national league.
👉 Sooner to make the dream happen.
But dreams need teammates. We’re calling on more stakeholders, and anyone who believes in football with meaning.
So if you’re reading this and thinking, “I want to be part of that”—don’t just think it. Reach out. Let’s do this together.
Because football unites. Rivers revive. And community wins.
