Mathare River FC proved our mettle on the road this week, overcoming both a determined St Benedict side and some questionable officiating to secure a vital 3-2 win. In a match that kept the fans on edge until the final whistle, the River boys showed that even when things don't go perfectly, they have the clinical edge to get the job done.

First Half: Arogo’s Accuracy and a Defensive Blip

The match kicked off with high intensity, and it didn't take long for the pressure to pay off. In the 26th minute, Augustin Obonyo was hacked down after a dangerous tackle just outside the area. George Arogo stepped up to the dead ball and curled a beautiful free-kick past the wall to give Mathare the early lead.

However, the hosts weren't ready to fold. A lapse in concentration at the back in the 33rd minute allowed St Benedict to find space outside the box, and they took full advantage with a long-range strike that leveled the score at 1-1. Mathare nearly went into the break ahead when Arogo stood over another free-kick in the 39th minute, but his goal-bound effort agonizingly scrubbed the top of the crossbar and went out.

Second Half: The Captain’s Lead and "Rio" Punishes the Keeper

The second half was a story of Mathare dominance. We came out of the tunnel with massive momentum, dictating the tempo and starving the hosts of possession. That persistence was rewarded in the 67th minute when our maestro captain, Jared Ochieng, stepped up for another set-piece and calmly converted to make it 2-1.

Just as it looked like we were cruising, a route-one long ball from St Benedict in the 79th minute managed to find the back of the net, drawing the hosts level once more. But football is a game of fine margins and punishing mistakes. In the 84th minute, the St Benedict goalkeeper attempted to waste time on the ball—a gamble that backfired spectacularly. "Rio" Fedinant Oyuga pounced on the hesitation, stealing the ball and slotting home a clinical finish to secure the 3-2 victory.

George Arogo was officially announced as the Man of the Match following our thrilling 3-2 away victory against St Benedict.

In a high-stakes fixture that demanded both technical brilliance and mental toughness, Arogo’s performance stood out as the catalyst for our success. His ability to command the pitch and deliver under pressure was the defining factor in bringing three points back to the riverside.

"George proved today why he is a vital part of this project. His opening goal gave us the momentum we needed, and his composure in the midfield kept us grounded when the game got heated."Coach Sammy

A Call for Fair Play

While we leave St Benedict with all three points, the club must address the standard of officiating witnessed today. Several "unforgivable errors" threatened to overshadow the hard work of the players on the pitch. We officially call upon the FKF Nairobi East County Branch to review these performances and ensure that officiating errors do not continue to dominate league fixtures. Fairness is the backbone of the game, and our players deserve a level playing field.

Looking Ahead at Baba Dogo

The focus now shifts immediately to the Labour Day Weekend. We return home to the Baba Dogo Ground for a highly anticipated clash against Spanners.

We need the faithful fans to turn up in large numbers to help us keep this momentum going. Let’s make Baba Dogo a fortress!
