Mathare River FC’s preseason gathered momentum with a symbolic trip to the source of the Mathare River — followed by a spirited 2–1 victory against FKF Division 2 side Gikuni FC.

It was an honor to also be accompanied by our partners and sponsors World water Net led by Kenya's Country director Mr. Peter De Koning.

A Journey Back to the River’s Beginning

The day started far from the pitch. The squad and technical team travelled to the lush highlands of Kiambu, where the Mathare River begins its winding journey into the city. Standing at the banks of the fresh, clear stream, the players reflected on the bond between club and river.

For many of the boys, it was their first time seeing the source. Head Coach Robert Muchiri summed it up: “We play for this river, we live along its banks. To see it pure at the start — that’s our motivation to protect it when it reaches Mathare.”

It was a reminder that our football is tied to something bigger.

Kickoff at Gikuni

The match against hosts Gikuni FC had all the makings of a classic preseason test. Their supporters packed the touchline, drums beating, chants echoing across the hills. It was raw, grassroots football — exactly where Mathare River FC feels at home.

From the first whistle, Gikuni pressed high, testing our backline with quick counters. But our defense stood firm, with [Defender Name] marshalling the line and making a crucial clearance in the opening minutes.

The Goals: Mathare River FC 2–1 Gikuni FC

  • 18th Minute (1–0): A slick passing move down the right opened space for Gikuni FC Winger . His cross was met by their striker, who headed calmly to give Gikuni the lead. The homefans erupted.

  • 21st Minute (1–0): George Arogo curled in a free kick from 25 yards, a stunning strike that hit the crossbar.

  • 28st Minute (1–0): Mathare River pulled one back after sustained pressure, punishing a loose clearance with a sharp finish inside the box. Our away— a small but loud group — erupted.

  • 37th Minute (2–1): Just before halftime, Mathare River FC added another goal from a slight blunder from Gikuni FC. A goal worthy of any league stage. The final  minutes were tense, but our boys showed resilience, grinding out the win.

Lessons and Next Steps

The friendly wasn’t just about the scoreline. It tested our shape, gave young players valuable minutes, and proved that Mathare River FC can compete against higher-division opposition. Assistant Coach Sammy praised the team’s discipline, while also pointing out areas for improvement: “We need to manage possession better, but the fight and spirit were clear. This team is hungry for more.”

The win sets the tone for what’s ahead. This season, Mathare River FC enters the FKF County League — a significant step up from last year’s competition. New stadiums, tougher opponents, bigger crowds — and bigger expectations.

But one thing won’t change: our double mission. As we rise in football, we remain committed to regenerating the Mathare River. From cleanups to environmental education, every game is also a call to action.
