Mathare River FC produced a magnificent, resilient display to come from behind and secure a brilliant 3-1 victory over Zimmerman All Stars, courtesy of a Josphat Nganga masterclass and sheer tactical grit.

Despite an early setback, the team showed immense composure to steady the ship, turning what could have been a frustrating afternoon into a showcase of character, tactical flexibility, and clinical finishing.

The match did not start according to plan. In the 11th minute, Zimmerman All Stars struck first. Capturing a quick ball, they unleashed a powerful strike from just outside the penalty area that left our keeper with no chance, putting the visitors ahead.

Rather than panicking, Mathare River FC showed maturity. The boys instantly calmed the game down, retained possession, and began dictating the tempo to claw their way back into the contest.

The patience paid off in the 23rd minute. Roman Junior showcased his blistering pace, utterly outpacing his marker to latch onto a through ball before coolly slotting home a deserved equalizer to restore parity.

With momentum firmly on their side, Mathare took the lead just before the break. In the 37th minute, Augustine Obonyo caused chaos on the left wing, cutting inside and lifting a dangerous ball into the box. While the Zimmerman defenders managed an initial hurried clearance, Josphat Nganga was perfectly positioned to fire a brilliant, close-range header back into the net, making it 2-1.

The second half was a battle of attrition, but Mathare’s backline held firm before a moment of pure magic put the game to bed.

In the 72nd minute, John Muthui was brought down heavily 40 yards out. Up stepped Josphat Nganga. The talismanic midfielder struck a breathtaking, pinpoint free-kick that sailed over the wall and flew directly into the top-left corner, leaving the Zimmerman goalkeeper rooted to the spot and sealing a phenomenal 3-1 win.

While it was a stellar team performance, three individuals deserved special mention for their extraordinary contributions. Josphat Nganga put in a truly talismanic performance. Nganga was everywhere, scoring the crucial go-ahead header and wrapping up the points with a world-class 40-yard free-kick to rightfully earn the Man of the Match honors.

James Mworia was the definition of a team player. Mworia put in a relentless shift, demonstrating elite tactical versatility by starting the match as a rock-solid Centre-Back before seamlessly transitioning to Left-Back to lock down the flank.

Augustine Obonyo was a constant nightmare for the Zimmerman fullback. Obonyo dominated the left wing all afternoon, boasting an incredible 90% successful dribble rate and creating the chaos that led to the second goal.

We now shift our focus on the next match on 23rd May as we make a short trip to Drive Inn Primary School as we take on 23 All Stars.
